Ecological Restoration of the Boreal Forest in Fennoscandia

نویسندگان

چکیده

Abstract Mixed-severity disturbances have historically shaped boreal forests, creating a dynamic mosaic landscape. In Fennoscandia, however, intensive even-aged forest management has simplified the landscape, threatening biodiversity. To safeguard this biodiversity, we therefore need to restore structural complexity in hitherto managed forests. Knowledge generated from relevant case studies on natural disturbance emulation–based ecological restoration suggests that prescribed burning positively affects many early-successional organisms. Gap cutting benefits some insects and wood fungi but limited effect birds, bryophytes, vascular plants. Restoration of deciduous forests appears benefit light- tree–associated insect species birds.

Tree Mortality in a Pinus sylvestris Dominated Boreal Forest Landscape in Vienansalo Wilderness, Eastern Fennoscandia

Tree mortality and its causes and spatial pattern were examined along four transects (width 40 m, length 2550–3960 m), with a total length of 12 190 m and area of 48.8 ha, in a Pinus sylvestris L. dominated, boreal forest landscape. Tree mortality was determined within a time window of 3 years by identifying those trees (dbh ≥ 10 cm) along the transects that fi tted into one of the three catego...

Is Alaska’s Boreal Forest Now Crossing a Major Ecological Threshold?

Daniel H. Mann*§ Many boreal forests grow in regions where climate is now warming rapidly. Changes in T. Posttreatment tree mortality after forest ecological restoration, Arizona, United States.

Pine-oak forests are of high ecological importance worldwide, but many are threatened by uncharacteristically severe wildfire. Forest restoration treatments, including the reintroduction of a surface fire regime, are intended to decrease fire hazard and emulate historic ecosystem structure and function. Restoration has recently received much management attention and short-term study, but little...

The Elusive Boreal Forest Thaumarchaeota

In recent years, Archaea have, with increasing frequency, been found to colonize both agricultural and forest soils in temperate and boreal regions. The as yet uncultured group I.1c of the Thaumarchaeota has been of special interest. These Archaea are widely distributed in mature vegetated acidic soils, but little has been revealed of their physiological and biological characteristics. The I.1c...

Conservation Ecology: Sustainable Development of the Boreal Forest: Interaction of Ecological, Social, and Business Feedbacks

Humans are an integral component of ecosystems, just as the products of ecosystems are critical to social systems. To understand the future state of the boreal forest, we must understand the ecological, social, economic, and business interactions that link ecological and social systems into a common regional system, as well as the feedbacks that govern changes in these interactions. We analyze ...
